Last week’s Open Days were a huge success, welcoming music lovers to explore our choirs, orchestras, and the new concert band. We were thrilled to officially launch our new Concert Band this term, adding even more opportunities for students to make music together. Looking ahead, our youth ensembles are gearing up for an exciting Floriade performance, promising a wonderful celebration of music in Canberra’s spring festival.

Music for Canberra at Floriade! - Saturday 20 SeptemberMusic For Canberra is delighted to present a vibrant afternoon of youth music-making as part of Floriade 2025. This special performance will feature a range of our ensembles, including the renowned Canberra Youth Orchestra, our Children’s Choirs, and the newly established Canberra Youth Concert Band, making their debut. Audiences can look forward to a dynamic and varied program, showcasing the talent and hard work of our young musicians across orchestral, choral, and concert band repertoire. Set against the backdrop of spring blooms and community celebration, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience the joy and energy of Canberra’s next generation of performers. Free and open to all.

Vale Marjorie GilbyIt is with great sadness that we remember Marjorie Gilby, whose passion, generosity, and dedication have left an indelible mark on Music for Canberra. Marjorie’s musical journey began alongside her husband Ross, the inaugural president of the Canberra Junior Orchestra, and continued through decades of service to Canberra’s young musicians. She played a vital role in nurturing talent through the Canberra Youth Orchestra and Canberra Youth Music, inspiring generations with her guidance and support. The Gilby family’s commitment to music extended far beyond their own children—Anne, Barbara, Martin, and Janet—who themselves contributed as performers and tutors, continuing the family legacy of mentorship and excellence. Marjorie’s love of music, and her belief in its power to inspire and connect, will be remembered by all who knew her. Her legacy remains a cornerstone of Music for Canberra, shaping our community for generations.

Canberra Symphony Orchestra: Mozart’s RequiemErin Helyard conducts a musical tribute to Mozart, from child prodigy to Classical master. The program begins in Salzburg with a sunny three-movement symphony for strings by the 16-year-old prodigy and ends in Vienna with his final masterpiece, the Requiem. The Requiem itself is legendary: Mozart’s dying effort, completed by a student at the behest of a mysterious client, is at once anguished, heartfelt, and shining with hope. Between these bookends, Australian composer Corinna Bonshek’s Dreams of the Earth I reflects on summer cicadas, birds in flight, and the unease of a changing climate—evoking, in her words, “hope, suffering and love.” |
