Welcome to our Canberra choir family,

If you’re interested in a weekly choir for your child that’s musically challenging, socially collaborative, confidence-building, and genuinely fun––

––Then Music for Canberra (MfC) is proud to offer you FIVE choirs to choose from.

All MfC choirs provide opportunities to develop your child’s musical skills, singing, literacy, memory, social-emotional learning, cooperation, confidence, presentation skills, and cultural learning.

We offer choirs for ages 5 to 21 years for both:

- Raw beginners in early primary (no experience or musical knowledge needed)

- Keen, capable, and confident choristers ready to tackle challenges and perform on stage

Both auditioned and non-auditioned choirs are available.

No appointment or fee needed for your family to try out a rehearsal.

Read below for information about each choir.

Canberra Children’s Choir (CCC)

We offer the education-focused Canberra Children’s Choir (established in 1967) which now caters to children aged 5-9 years old.

Suitable for complete beginners, without previous musical experience. Even children WITH musical experience find this choir plenty of fun.

CCC is not a ‘performance choir’. This means there’s no need to worry about the pressures of performing, except for perhaps performing for parents on occasion.

This choir’s role is to educate, engage, and entertain your child, resulting in breakouts of smiles and laughter amongst the singing.

CCC is helmed by Lucus Allerton who brings his years of choir experience and accredited training in musical pedagogy for children, in the internationally acclaimed methodology of Kodály.

Choristers sing short songs from around the world, enjoy our musical games (many of which are sneakily designed to educate choristers and develop musical skills), and play and sing together with any friends they bring.

Parents and guardians are very welcome to sit in and observe –– and perhaps join in on some of the fun!

We highly recommend any kids bring their friends to play these musical games together, and of course, sing together too.

No appointment needed to show up and try out a rehearsal. No audition needed. No musical experience needed.

Woden Valley Youth Choir (WVYC)

Established in 1969, this is a group specifically asked to sing for King Charles himself at his Australian reception in Parliament House in 2024 (with the King standing only a few feet away!).

WVYC also presents Canberra’s Carols by Candlelight each year –– one of the longest-running city carols events in Australia, with attendance in the thousands.

The WVYC family offers you four choirs of different age groups and skill levels, all of which perform in public, sometimes on a professional basis.

“The youth choir stole the show for me – such clear facial expressions of engagement with the theme, such musical discipline and such joy in being part of the majestic event."––Limelight, Australia's Classical Music and Arts Magazine

Leonis Voices (WVYC)

For primary school-aged choristers who are confident in holding a melody.

A fine gateway for youngsters into the wider world of performance, Leonis combines musical games with learning songs to sing and share amongst the public, in the safety and friendship of peers.

Australis Voices (WVYC)

For high school-aged choristers with higher voices, ready to sing more complicated songs.

Australis serves as a natural next step for children in the younger Leonis voices choir, for older voices ready for the next level.

A remarkably well-bonded group of older youths, it follows Olivia’s musical philosophy of choir and connection going hand in hand.

This choir takes both its fun and its singing seriously, with choristers ready to astonish themselves with how good they sound, as they perform diverse and engaging repertoire.

Conducted by Olivia Swift.

“Woden Valley Youth Choir performed with an exceptional level of musicianship, youthful exuberance, and true pitch.”–– Canberra CityNews

Centauri Voices (WVYC)

For high school-aged choristers with lower or transitioning voices, ready to sing more complicated songs.

If your voice cracks during rehearsal, our conductor Lucus likes to say: ‘This is exactly the right place for that’.

A tragic number of youths with deepening voices feel too vulnerable and self-conscious about their voice to sing.

This choir was designed as a place for them.

Best of all, Centauri still sing some spectacular sounds, sometimes in three parts, and have a good time singing sea shanties or ridiculous songs about moustaches.

Conducted by Lucus Allerton.

Despite our best efforts to stamp out fun and smiles at WVYC, our choristers still enjoy themselves.
