Canberra’s Flagship Youth Ensembles Open Rehearsals to Next Generation of Musicians

CANBERRA, ACT — Two of the capital’s most prestigious musical institutions, the Woden Valley Youth Choir and the Canberra Youth Orchestra, are inviting the next generation of performers to experience their rehearsals firsthand.

Throughout late April and early May, these renowned brands—alongside their sister ensembles—will host a series of “Come and Try” Open Days. The events are designed to demystify the world of orchestral and choral music, offering young people a chance to "test drive" an ensemble that fits their age, instrument, and experience level.

“Sing in a choir, play in an orchestra, or jam with a concert band. Whatever your style, this is your chance to jump in and try it out,” says Olivia Swift, WVYC Artistic Director. “Meet new people, make music together, and see where it takes you. For these Open Days, there is no pressure and no auditions—just music, fun, and a warm welcome.”

Find Your Ensemble

Music for Canberra’s programs are structured to support musicians from their very first notes to advanced performance:

  • Woden Valley Youth Choir (WVYC)

  • Who: Singers aged 7 to 21.

  • What to expect: A vibrant choir focused on musical excellence and connection. While the choir is typically auditioned, the Open Day provides a pressure-free environment to participate. Ensembles span treble and mixed voices, including dedicated support for those navigating changing voices.

  • Canberra Youth Orchestra & Training Strings

  • Who: String players of all levels, plus advanced woodwind, brass, and percussion.

  • What to expect: A complete pathway for strings. Whether a student is still playing on "open strings" or is ready for the advanced repertoire of the flagship CYO, there is a chair waiting for them.

  • Canberra Youth Concert Band (CYCB)

  • Who: Woodwind, brass, and percussion students in Years 6–12.

  • What to expect: A non-auditioned, high-energy group led by the phenomenal conductor Wyana O’Keeffe. It’s the perfect place to jam and build ensemble skills.

  • Canberra Children’s Choir

  • Who: The youngest singers, ages 5–8.

  • What to expect: A gentle, non-auditioned introduction to music. The focus is on musical games and vocal discovery rather than formal performance – perfect for building early confidence.
